PUBLIC INTEREST

Public Interest Committee appointments

gail_lilleyFormer Council member Gail Lilley will head up a three-person Public Interest Committee (PIC) appointed by the provincial government to advise Council regarding its duty to serve and protect the public interest in carrying out the College's objectives.

In late July, the Minister of Education appointed Lilley, who is from Toronto, Zubeda Vahed of Mississauga and Anne Secord-Houston of Newmarket to one-year terms. Lilley will serve as chair of the committee.

In June 2006, the government amended the Ontario College of Teachers Act to create the PIC as a new statutory Council committee. The Act determines the committee's composition, membership and designation of a chair by Ministerial appointment.

According to legislation, the PIC is required to develop a work plan that identifies priorities, projects and activities through to the next election of Council. Thereafter, the PIC's plan would cover a term that corresponds to the full, three-year term of Council. PIC can ask for information from Council to help develop, modify and implement the work plan or to provide advice to Council. The College's budget, approved by Council, will support the work of the committee.

PIC will meet at least four times a year and as requested by the Chair, by Council, or by Council's Executive Committee.

The committee is expected to report annually to Council prior to Council's annual general meeting.
