Accreditation

Numerous new and renewed programs

The Accreditation Committee finalized a series of program accreditations at faculties of education across Ontario this spring and summer.

Windsor technological studies program

The Accreditation Committee granted general accreditation to the multi-session program in technological studies offered by the University of Windsor.

The program has been under way since its initial accreditation in 2005. The new period of accreditation continues until October 6, 2013, a date that harmonizes with the accreditation period for other pre-service programs offered by the faculty.

“The University of Windsor implemented the BEd/diploma in technological studies to respond to the shortage of technological teachers in the province and particularly in the Windsor-Essex region,” said then committee Chair Gord Hough, OCT. “The program was designed and implemented in partnership with the Greater Essex County DSB and the Windsor-Essex Catholic DSB. It gives Windsor’s technological teachers the opportunity to enter the profession without having to travel across the province.”

The technological studies program is open to candidates who have a teaching job and have been teaching technological studies on a Letter of Permission. It is offered over two summers, and the year of teaching in between those summers includes the practicum and facilitates the integration of theory in practice.

Graduates of the program receive either a Bachelor of Education or a diploma in education.

Junior/Intermediate addition at Wilfrid Laurier

The committee granted general accreditation to the consecutive program with concentrations in the Primary/Junior divisions at Wilfrid Laurier University. Accreditation with conditions was granted to the addition of concentrations in the Junior/Intermediate divisions.

Three conditions attached to the new Junior/Intermediate concentration require that Wilfrid Laurier’s dean of the faculty of education provide finalized course outlines, as well as additional information about the practicum and faculty expertise related to the addition to the program.

The period of accreditation for these programs continues until June 11, 2016.

Laurentian’s English-language concurrent program

The Accreditation Committee granted general accreditation to the English-language concurrent program, with concentrations in the Primary/Junior and Junior/Intermediate divisions, offered by Laurentian University and leading to a Bachelor of Education degree. The accreditation period continues until June 11, 2016.

Laurentian’s French-language consecutive program condition removed

The Accreditation Committee removed the condition previously attached to the addition of concentrations in Junior/Intermediate divisions in the multi-session, consecutive French-language program at l’école des sciences de l’éducation at Université Laurentienne.

The committee reviewed the information regarding qualifications of newly hired or appointed faculty and determined them to be appropriate as required by regulation. The condition was removed at its June 24, 2009 meeting.

Multiple programs approved at Nipissing

The committee granted general accreditation to three programs at Nipissing University:

  • the consecutive program for the Primary/Junior, Junior/Intermediate and Intermediate/Senior divisions leading to a Bachelor of Education degree
  • the concurrent program for the Primary/Junior and Junior/Intermediate divisions leading to a Bachelor of Education degree
  • the multi-session Aboriginal teacher certification program leading to a diploma in education

The accreditation period for all three programs continues until June 23, 2016.

The committee also granted initial accreditation, with conditions, to the multi-session teacher of Native language as a second language: Algonquian (Ojibwe) program leading to a diploma in education.

The conditions require that the dean of the faculty of education provide finalized course outlines and evidence that appropriately qualified faculty and instructors have been hired for the program, as well as submitting a plan and timeline within six months for satisfying the conditions.

The initial accreditation with conditions runs to June 23, 2011 or until the second class of teacher candidates enrolled in the program graduates (not to exceed June 23, 2012).

Niagara University’s Ontario-based program

Accreditation continued

The Accreditation Committee granted general accreditation to the consecutive program at Niagara University in Ontario, with concentrations in the Primary/Junior and Intermediate/Senior divisions. Based in Niagara Falls, NY, Niagara University has permission from the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities to offer a teacher education program at specified sites in Ontario.

The accreditation period expires June 12, 2016. The program leads to a Bachelor of Professional Studies degree.

The Accreditation Committee’s full decisions are available under Accreditation Reviews.
