Alternative French-language Bachelor of Education programs

The College's Accreditation Committee has accredited two part-time programs of professional education leading to a Bachelor of Education degree, which are intended to address a shortage of Francophone teachers in Ontario.

Part-time innovative programs at the University of Ottawa and Laurentian University will allow those now teaching with Letters of Permission and those wishing to shift career paths toward the classroom to pursue initial teacher preparation while continuing their current employment. This is good news for schools needing to address teacher shortages.

The committee accredited a program of professional education at the Primary/Junior and Junior/Intermediate divisions at the University of Ottawa. A Primary/Junior program at Laurentian University was also accredited with the condition that the practicum enable each student to participate in settings related to each division. Laurentian University subsequently met this requirement and the committee removed the condition.

These programs are offered over two years. Along with traditional course work, students may also be involved in video-conferencing and on-line activities. The first students are expected to graduate in 2006.

The responsibility for accreditation of programs at faculties of education, which is vested in the College, gives teachers in Ontario a unique role in guiding their profession.
